A LOT of people look to Pilates to help cure lower back pain. Lower back pain will affect 4 out of 5 people at some point in their lives, but the good news is 90% of acute back pain will resolve within 6 weeks. It’s primary cause can be standing poorly, but more likely in today’s world, excessive sitting and bad posture. Hours upon hours spent at the computer, in the car, out at dinner or at home along with poor posture and slouching forward. Over time this can lead to weakened muscles, imbalances and tension throughout our bodies. Then one day, out the blue – often reaching for something; getting up or down and bam you’re in agony, experiencing lower back pain and lack of movement.

Pilates aims to balance out your body to improve your posture – to be at it’s optimum in terms of mobility and function whilst supporting rehabilitation and prevention for causes of back pain. Learning alignments throughout the skeletal structure along with strengthening and using deep postural muscles are important skills for the body to adopt, Pilates helps you become aware of your movement habits and helps you to notice excessive tension in order for you to learn to use your body efficiently.

Can I still do Pilates if I have back pain?

Yes! If you’re in a first episode or acute phase though, please consult us first and check with you doctor. You may initially benefit more from private sessions that are tailored to you. These sessions are a worthwhile investment in the long run as exercises performed with poor technique in a class environment can possibly make your problems worse.

If you have significant back problems, there are exercises that should be avoided in the interim recovery period so it’s important to work with an experienced qualified Pilates teacher. We live and breathe Pilates at Pilates Revolution and we’re highly trained to keep you safe through your progression.

Pilates can be challenging but it shouldn’t be causing you pain. It can take a while to grasp and reap the full benefits but gradually, over time – the investment of time and practise pays you back ten fold. You learn to use your muscles and body efficiently in a way that supports you, helping you make the most of everyday life! We all know physical pain can affect our mental health. It’s not just exercise, it’s so you can move well, feel great and be happy. “Physical fitness is the first prerequisite of happiness” – Joe Pilates
